R Charts
The Range control chart (part of the X-bar R) plots the difference between the highest and lowest in a sample.
R2 and R2 (adj)
R2 has values between 0 and 1 and indicates the proportion of the variance in the Y that is explained by the fit of the regression model. R2 is the square of the multiple correlation between the Y and the predictors (Xs). R2 (adj) adjusts the R2 for the number of terms in the model. Strong independent predictors increase the value of R2 (adj) but poor predictors decrease the value of R2 (adj).
Random Sampling
One or more samples randomly selected from the universe (population). A sample selected such that each element has the same probability of being selected.
Random Variation
Variations in data which result from causes which cannot be pinpointed or controlled.
Randomizing an experiment
To run the various element of an experiment in a random order. Randomizing the experimental runs spreads out the effects of system noise so that the cause of the noise is not confused or confounded with any one particular factor. Factors could be confounded with time if the experiment is run in standard order. Experiments should normally be run in random order especially when there may be lurking unknown variables.
Randomness
A condition in which any individual event in a set of events has the same mathematical probability of occurrence as all other events within the specified set, i.e., individual events are not predictable even though they may collectively belong to a definable distribution.
Range
Range = maximum - minimum
Ranks
Values assigned to items in a sample to determine their relative occurrence in a population. Which horse ended in first place and which horse in second?
Ratio
Numeric scale which has an absolute zero point and equal units of measure throughout, i.e., measurements of an output parameter, i.e., amps.
Rational subgrouping
A technique used with control charts and other measurement techniques to group like things together, so the between group variation is larger than the within group variation.
Regelkaart
Regelkaart = Control chart (Eng.)
Regression
Summarizes, quantifies, describes and predicts relationships; The Y is continuous and the Xs are either continuous or discrete; Regression is used to 1. Determine if there is evidence of a relationship between Xs and Ys. 2. Model data to develop a mathematical equation to quantify the relationship. 3. Identify root causes. 4. Make predictions using the regression model.
Regression Equation
The regression equation describes and quantifies the relationship between the Y variable and the X variables. It can be used to predict values of the Y given Values for the Xs within the range of the variables used in the regression model. Example: The regression equation is Y1 = 3.26 + 0.454 X1
Reliability
The probability that a product or process will perform for some period of time without defect
Repeatability
Variation between successive measurements of the same part, same characteristic, by the same person using the same instrument (Gage variation).
Replication
Observations made under identical test conditions.
Representative Sample
A sample which accurately reflects a specific condition or set of conditions within the universe.
Reproducibility
Difference in the average of the measurement made by different persons while measuring identical characteristics (Operator variation).
Residu-analyse
Residual or Experimental Error
Variation in observations made under identical test conditions. Also called residual error. The amount of variation which cannot be attributed to the variables included in the experiment.
Response Variable
The indicator variable that is affected by the process variables. It is usually referred in Six Sigma terminology as “Y” “or “y”. The response variable is often called a dependent variable.
Rework loops
These are points in a process where problems are identified and passed backwards (or upstream) in a process to allow rework to be conducted. Rework should be minimized in an overall process and it is a key area for project teams to investigate in a DMAIC project.
Risk Analysis
The process of analyzing risks by a project team.
Robust Design
A term generically used to describe the ability to make a product or process design immune to sources of variation.
Rolled through-put yield
The probability of doing all things right in a process of multiple steps such that a product or service is produced error free.
Run Chart
A performance chart over time to monitor perfomance, detect trends, (anticipated) shifts or cycles e.g. for all the weeks of a year to date or all production days.
